Kannur (IPA: [kaɳɳuËr]), formerly known as Cannanore, is a city and a Municipal Corporation in the Kannur district, state of Kerala, India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Kannur District and 518 km north of state capital Thiruvananthapuram. During British rule in India, Kannur (Eye of the Lands; means the best of the lands = the best land) was known as Cannanore, which is used now only by the Indian Railways. It is the largest city of the North Malabar region.
